About Us
Kauai Tropical Timbers is a partnership created to provide an
investment growth opportunity and a positive impact on the
ecology of Kauai. The purpose of our forestry program is to
grow tropical hardwoods in the United States with a focus on
sustainable forestry. With the natural supply of tropical
hardwoods diminishing at an astonishing and disturbing rate
around the world, we are growing trees with the focus of
forest values that address economic, environmental, social
and cultural concerns.
Once an island of koa, ohia, sandalwood and other species,
many of which were endemic to specific Hawaiian Islands,
Kauai has the ideal climate for tropical sustainable forestry
practices. By growing trees such as teak, mahogany, and others,
we can add to the reforestation needed on this island to
maintain and revitalize what is and once was.
The vision of KTT was conceived by its President, Mark Smith.
Mark has been a resident of Kauai since 1981. He has been
actively involved in botany for more than a decade, building
a wealth of knowledge and experience in tropical horticulture.
He has worked with endangered and endemic plants, and has
had great success with numerous ornamental, agricultural and
forestry species, including teak, mahogany, koa, and several
rosewoods, to name a few.
